"Bye!" you cried, smiling sadly. "I'll miss you! Don't forget to call regularly!"

Mathias grinned. "I'll miss you too, and I promise I will! No annoying countries will be able to bother the King this Christmas, don't worry." He ran back up to you and kissed both of your cheeks, and then your nose, making you giggle. Then he wiped away the tears forming in your eyes and whispered, "I won't forget." And with that, he made his way back down the path and got into the waiting car that was ready to whisk him away.

I don't want a lot for Christmas
There is just one thing I need
I don't care about the presents
Underneath the Christmas tree

Christmas had always been your favourite holiday. A time for getting together with the family and those little moments of joy when unwrapping presents, not to mention the fact that there was always a little sprig of mistletoe around... not that you and Mathias ever needed an excuse to kiss.

I just want you for my own
More than you could ever know
Make my wish come true
All I want for Christmas
Is you

You sighed. For Ludwig to call an emergency meeting so suddenly, especially when Christmas was right around the corner! Didn't he realise that not everyone liked working through the holidays?

You sighed, staring sadly into the bright decorations on the Christmas tree in the middle of the sitting room.

I don't want a lot for Christmas
There is just one thing I need
I don't care about the presents
Underneath the Christmas tree

The two of you had stopped everywhere looking for Christmas trees, finding big ones and small ones, light ones and dark ones, artificial ones and real ones, but not finding one that was right for you. You kept finding small imperfections with each, and didn't enjoy when Mathias made jokes about them all.

"Come on, (Name), what's wrong with this one?" He groaned, after you rejected almost fifty perfectly fine trees.

"It's way too small!" You cried, pulling him away. Once you'd reached the end of the trees, you spotted the perfect one. It was a couple of inches taller than you, and was a beautiful emerald colour. The branches were strong and soft to the touch, and best of all, it was real.

"Look at this one! It's perfect." You breathed. Together, you bought it and carted it home; all the while you jumped up and down in your seat, clapping delightedly.

When you got home, Mathias trimmed the tree, put it in a little pot, and you fetched the many boxes of decorations from the attic to hang around it. You spent hours just decorating it, and when they saw all the tinsel and baubles left over, you decided to decorate the rest of the house too. Together, you draped the tinsel round the stairs and up on walls, and the baubles were hung on lights and dangled from the ceiling. When every last bit of decoration was either on the tree or around you, you both collapsed to the floor, admiring your handiwork.

"Wow," Mathias exhaled. "It looks awesome!"

You grinned evilly. "Don't get too comfortable, we haven't even started yet. There are still so many places we haven't decorated yet."

I don't need to hang my stockings
There upon the fireplace
Santa Claus won't keep me happy
With a toy on Christmas day

"So, what are you getting me for Christmas?" You asked casually as you hung the stockings up on the mantelpiece.

"I can't tell you, (Name)! That would ruin the surprise! But let's just say it's the thought that counts." Mathias replied, tapping your nose lightly and winking. You pouted.

"So you're not going to tell me?" you asked.

"Nope."

"Well, then, I'm not telling you what I got you for Christmas either!"

"That's fine with me. I'll find out by Christmas." He grinned, leaning down and kissing you on the cheek.

You huffed in annoyance. Obviously, your plan to get him to tell you what your present was had failed.

I just want you for my own
More than you could ever know
Make my wish come true
All I want for Christmas
Is you baby

Mathias turned to look at you, who was staring up at the sky, an expression of pure delight written all over your face. "A shooting star," you breathed. Quickly, you put your hands together and closed your eyes. After a few moments, you opened them again and grinned.

"What did you wish for?" Mathias asked. You tutted, shaking your head.

"If I tell you, my wish won't come true!" you replied, wagging a finger in front of his face.

I want it to come true, though. I wish that Mathias and I can enjoy our first Christmas together, you thought.

I won't ask for much this Christmas
I won't even wish for snow
I'm just gonna keep on waiting
Underneath the mistletoe

Mathias had been fixing the mistletoe above the porch door, when you came in wearing a headband with a little sprig of mistletoe attached to it.

"Isn't it a bit early for mist–" he was cut off by you pressing your lips to his own. When they parted, you gestured to the mistletoe now fastened safely above the porch. "Shouldn't I be asking you the same question?" you asked, raising an eyebrow.

"Uh... I guess you're right." Mathias replied, leaning in for another kiss.

I won't make a list and send it
To the North Pole for Saint Nick
I won't even stay awake to
Hear those magic reindeer click

You sat at your desk, busily scribbling something onto a (f/c) coloured piece of paper. Mathias came up behind her and asked loudly, "What's up, (Name)?"

You almost jumped out of your seat in surprise. "Mathias!" You growled. "Don't do that ever again! You scared the living daylights out of me!"

"Sorry." He grinned. "So, what are you doing?"

"Writing my Christmas list, of course! Then I'll put it in the chimney and if it goes up the flue, then I'll get what I want for Christmas. But if it falls down into the flames, then it won't. My mother always told me that the letters that get sent out of the chimney fly straight to the North Pole for Father Christmas to read. I have yet to see one of my lists go down in flames!" You said, happily putting down her pen. "Do you want to make one?" You asked.

"Nope, I'm good, thanks." Mathias stopped himself from telling her he could deliver their letters straight to Father Christmas himself.

You pouted and picked the piece of paper off the desk. "Fine; it doesn't matter anyway, because I've got one for you already!" You said, pulling out a red piece of paper identical to the one you held in your hand. "See this? It has everything you want for Christmas, right here."

His jaw dropped. "Wh-where did you get that?"

"Oh, I went to Tino and asked him about the things you might like, and he gave this to me. Where else would I find a Christmas list written by you?" You replied, scanning it. "It looks a bit old, though, but oh well. So, are you going to put it in the chimney or am I?"

"Give me that!" He grabbed the piece of paper from your hand and marched over to the fireplace, you following closely behind, smirking.

"Okay, on the count of three, we'll put them in. Alright?" You nodded.

"1..."

"2..."

"3!"

You threw your pieces of paper into the fireplace. Yours shot straight up, while Mathias' hovered for a bit and then fell into the fire. You cheered while he stared in disbelief at the flames licking his paper.

"Aw, don't take it so seriously, Køhler, it's just a piece of paper – what the hell? Mat, your paper's floating!" You cried. Mathias looked more closely at his piece of paper. Indeed, it seemed to be rising, and after a few painful seconds of hovering just above the flames so he could see the burnt edges of the paper, it flew up and out of sight. You stared at the fireplace for a few more moments before bursting out into laughter.

"There you go, Mathias! Even your wishes get granted!" You beamed up at him.

"Of course it would! I am the King, after all!" Mathias bragged, puffing his chest up and flashing his signature grin, although your could sense more than a little bit of relief in there as well.

'Cause I just want you here tonight
Holding on to me so tight
What more can I do
Baby all I want for Christmas
Is you

That night, you laid in bed alone. You rolled over to Mathias's side and hugged his pillow, breathing in his familiar smell, and soon fell asleep, your dreams filled with thoughts of him.

All the lights are shining
So brightly everywhere
And the sound of children's
Laughter fills the air

Laughter exploded from Mathias as the two of you went speeding down the hill on his toboggan. You started screaming not too long after, grabbing his shirt tightly. You were going down the hill at an alarming pace, and the closer you got to the bottom of the hill, the louder your screams got. You had agreed to go sledding with him, but didn't realise how different his idea of 'sledding' was to your own.

"Mathias, stop this thing!" You shrieked, your grip on him tightening even further, but he couldn't hear you. He was too busy laughing like a child who'd had too much sugar – pretty much his natural attitude, but ramped up with the adrenalin rush he was getting.

"Mathias, I'm telling you now, stop this toboggan RIGHT NOW or else!" You shrieked as Mathias swerved sharply and narrowly avoided hitting a tree. You were getting nearer and nearer the bottom of the hill, and as you jumped off a particularly large snowdrift, you were getting paler. After he finally reached the bottom and stopped the sled of hell, you dizzily stumbled off the toboggan and glared weakly at Mathias, who was actually rolling in the snow, roaring with laughter.

"That was awesome! We should so do that again!" He yelled, grabbing your arm with one arm and picking up the sled with the other. You turned green at the thought.

"NO!"

And everyone is singing
I hear those sleigh bells ringing
Santa won't you bring me the one I really need
Won't you please bring my baby to me

On Christmas Eve, you were inside in a warm knitted jumper and a mug of hot chocolate, when you heard a strange noise.

"I'm sure I just heard Santa Claus' sleigh bells ringing! Santa, if you can hear me, please bring Mathias to me tomorrow so we can spend Christmas together!" You cried. You knew it was a bit childish to be looking to Santa for him to come back, but that was how desperately you waited for his return.

Oh I don't want a lot for Christmas
This is all I'm asking for
I just want to see my baby
Standing right outside my door

Early on Christmas day, you woke up and rolled over to the other side of the bed, feeling a little pang in your chest when you realised that Mathias wasn't there. You sighed; obviously you hadn't gotten your wish. You got out of bed and dressed up warm, because the temperatures had dropped below freeing overnight, and were only consoled a little by the sight of all the fluffy snow outside the window.

You yawned and went downstairs to make yourself a cup of coffee, but before you could, the doorbell rang. You went to answer it, but when you opened the door, there was nothing but a giant present, all wrapped up with a big bow in the middle. Confused, you tried to move it inside, wondering who could possibly have sent such a huge gift.

God, it's so heavy! What the hell is in this thing? You thought. Hastily unwrapping the ribbon, pushing it aside and opening the lid, you couldn't believe your eyes when Mathias popped right out of it, waving his arms around and flashing a toothy grin your way.

"Merry Christmas!" he yelled, stooping down to kiss you. You were completely immobile for a minute, before squealing and leaping into his outstretched arms, kissing him passionately.

A few hours later, you were wrapped up in Mathias's arms. You were sitting by the Christmas tree, and the box Mathias had jumped out of had been unceremoniously shoved in the corner.

"I knew you'd come! My wish really did come true!" You cooed, nuzzling your face into his neck. He grinned.

"I knew you'd wait for me to come back, and I can't really let you spend Christmas alone, can I? So I convinced good old Lukas to take down some notes for me, and Tino made some arrangements to ship me back over here, and here I am!"

You smiled. "Thank you. You came back," you whispered. Mathias wiped them away, wagging a finger in front of her face. "What can I say? After all, it's Christmas, and our first one, too!" he added, giving you a bear hug. Suddenly, he stood up.

"So... which presents are mine?" He asked, circling the festive tree.

Oh, Mathias! You thought. Of course, after being away for almost two weeks, the first thing you do is get distracted by a bunch of presents.

Oh I just want him for my own
More than you could ever know
Make my wish come true
Baby all I want for Christmas is...
You

That night, you and Mathias were sat outside, sharing a blanket and sipping tea, when you saw a bright light in the sky. You gasped. "Is that Santa? Mathias, I think that's Santa!" You cried, leaping out of her seat and craning your neck to see better.

"Santa? What? But he's at the Christmas meeting - (Name)..." Mathias started, getting up to stand next to you.

You tilted your head to look at him. "Mmm?"

"Didn't you know that Santa Claus is actually Tino?"

Your eyes widened, and you motioned for him to carry on. When he stayed silent, you mouthed "No! No way! Really?"

He nodded. "It's true. That letter he gave you was actually one he begged me to write for him a few years back."

"But.. how does he get to all those houses in time?"

"Magic."

"Really?"

"Yep." He pulled you into an embrace, kissing your forehead.

Nuzzling into him, you closed your eyes and breathed out a silent thank-you to Tino for making your wish come true.
Christmas reader insert for everyone because as well as it being Christmas, it's also my first Christmas here on dA! :w00t:

The song is called All I Want For Christmas Is You, by Mariah Carey. That song has been stuck in my head for well over a week, and now I hate it just as much as I'm in love with it.

But yeah, I got to upload this on Christmas Day because I'm a clever child and I remembered to save all my new stories on my memory stick before my computer ruined itself, and my sister is oh-so-kindly letting me use hers to upload it.

Anyway, merry Christmas, everyone! I hope your Christmases go/are going/went well! I mean, it's just past five p.m. here, so I'm guessing New Zealanders have already had theirs? ^^;

Don't forget to eat lots of food and don't do bad things, okay?
